welcome to Manaslu circuit trekking- one of the best scenic, and off the beaten path- trekking routs of Nepal that will take you around the Mt. Manaslu- the eighth highest peak in the world. Manaslu lies in the Mansiri himal range--an inner Himal sub-range of Nepal Himalaya—including Himalchuli and Ngadi Chuli, the 18 th and 20 th highest peak in the world.
Unlike other mountains passes such as Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, Manaslu circuit pass, called Larkya la,5106 m., is much easier because of its topographical features and, the pass itself is relatively on low elevation. The local people of Nubri valley, so called Nubri people also call Manaslu, Mount pung ghen, the protecting mountain god of this region that’s why the Nubri people have built the Pung Ghen gompa (monastery) 400 years ago in order to please, and in respect of the god just in front of mount Manaslu which you can explore while you will have an extra day for acclimatization in Sama village. Mt. Manaslu, also known as mountain of the spirit by the Nepali people, is a killer Mountain in terms of mountaineering expedition because more than 60 climbers have died while climbing, even when there were less numbers of mountaineering groups were taking part. However, Japanese expeditions group first summited the Manaslu in 1956 after a few persistent attempts.
This route mostly starts from the Machhikhola, a village in scenic Budi Gandaki River bank. And, follows all the way through river gorges and valleys uphill and downhill passing several small Gurung and Tamang villages. You will enter into the Manaslu conservation area just before passing Jagat village. The conservation was established in 1998 by the government of Nepal which covers about 1663 sq.km., harbouring 33 species of mammals,110 species of birds ,11 species butterflies, 3 species of reptiles and about 2000 different types of plants. Because of its varied topography, this trail enters from a very lowland subtropical valley passing through midland and Mountain valley like Sama Gao, all the way to Larkya la pass. And, this is what makes this route so thrilling and unique. This Manaslu region was not open for outside trekkers until 1992.However, it is still a restricted area. So, one must obtain a special trekking permit to enter in this region which is issued by the government of Nepal. You must have at least two people in a group in order to be eligible to get such permit. This is one of the less explored, pristine, hidden valleys of the entire Nepal Himalayan region. So, it is a perfect route and area for those who want to explore about the topography, ethnic people and their culture, and the ancient history. This route used to be an ancient salt trading route to Tibet while Tibetan rock salt had overwhelming market all over Nepal.
